EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE 
The nationally and internationally recognized faculty and research programs at the Institute provide a wide range of opportunities for graduate study in Earth Systems Science. Based on frequency with which published papers are cited by colleagues, UNH is among the top 100 American research universities. The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) currently ranks UNH 4th nationwide in environmental science and, from 1998-2002, ISI ranked UNH 3rd nationwide in geosciences.
The interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Natural Resources and Earth System Science offers students participation in advanced research at EOS. Earth Systems Science faculty research areas include: atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric and ocean dynamics, marine and terrestrial biogeochemistry, climate change, forest and wetland ecology, marine fisheries, hydrology, marine chemistry, geochemistry, paleoclimatology, and remote sensing of terrestrial and coastal ocean ecosystems.
Ph.D. students enroll in the interdisciplinary program and tailor their academic path with guidance from an advisory committee. A guidance committee of at least five members advises a Ph.D. student on coursework and research topic, and conducts required examinations. Students are encouraged to include one off-campus committee member. Two degrees are offered under the cross-college program:
Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Environmental Studies
Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences (with options of Geology and Oceanography)
At the master's level, students are matriculated in the Natural Resources, Earth Sciences, or Zoology Departments. The Department of Natural Resources offers five M.S. options in Forestry, Environmental Conservation, Soil Science, Water Resources, and Wildlife. The Department of Earth Sciences has four M.S. options in Geology, Hydrology, Oceanography, and Geochemical Systems.
